Cardiff Devils Weekend Review (Coventry Blaze & Sheffield Steelers)

The Cardiff Devils made up for a poor weekend performance last week by taking all four points this time around against the Coventry Blaze and Sheffield Steelers.

The Devils first challenge was to fend off the visiting Coventry Blaze.

The Devils went behind midway through the first period. David Broll opened the scoring on the powerplay. Assisted by Justin Hache and Andrew Johnston.

Dillon Lawerence took a 2 minute penalty for slashing.

The resulting powerplay created a goal for the Devils. Joey Martin on his return to the ice grabbed a goal. He was set up by Sean McMonagle and Sam Jardine.

First Period: Cardiff Devils 1-1 Coventry Blaze

The Devils took the lead late on in the second period. Gleason Fournier put the Devils infront. Assists were awarded to Mark Richardson and Joey Martin.

The Devils added a third in no time, Bryce Reddick scored just 29 seconds later. Joey Haddad and Masi Marjamaki were awarded the assists.

Matt Pope rounded off the rout with a great goal. The two assists went to Matias Sointu and Charles Linglet.

Second Period: Cardiff Devils 4-1 Coventry Blaze

The third period saw the game slow back down again.

Stephen Dixon scored the only goal of the period. Another powerplay goal for the Devils which saw Mark Richardson pick up an assist as well as Matias Sointu picking up his second assist.

Third Period: Cardiff Devils 5-1 Coventry Blaze

Star Three: Sean McMonagle

With 2 points in the bag in Challenge Cup action, the Devils travelled away to rivals Sheffield Steelers

The Steelers couldn’t make the most of three separate power play attempts that the Devils gave up.

The Devils too couldn’t get going due to the amount of time on the penalty kill.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the first period.

First Period: Sheffield Steelers 0-0 Cardiff Devils

The Second period would see a goal and the first came from a rebounded goal for Joey Haddad. The assists went to Josh Batch and Masi Marjamaki.

The Steelers tied the game with a good short-handed goal. Marc-Olivier Vallerand stole the puck from the on charging Gleason Fournier and then simply had to slot the puck past Ben Bowns.

Second Period: Sheffield Steelers 1-1 Cardiff Devils

With it all to play for the third period was vital.

The Devils took the early lead through Sam Jardine. A rocket of a shot was fumbled in by Jardine who was trying to originally screen the shot.

Nikolai Lemtyugov levelled the score after he was set up by both John Armstrong and David Phillips.

It would be the Devils to score the final goal of the game. Charles Linglet fired a shot towards goal which was tipped in by Joey Haddad to seal the win for the Devils. Assists going to Charles Linglet and Gleason Fournier.

Third Period: Sheffield Steelers 2-3 Cardiff Devils

A great way to end the weekend as the Devils get revenge on the Blaze and defeat a rival in a grueling match.

Next week the Devils will host Manchester Storm who will be the next team to witness ‘Block 13’ in the flesh.

Away from home the Devils continue their Challenge Cup Campaign with another game against the Coventry Blaze.
