Report: Cardiff Devils 5-4 Coventry Blaze (SO)

The Cardiff Devils have almost secured a spot in the next round of the Challenge Cup after a shootout victory against the Coventry Blaze.

Coventry came out the blocks quickest as too goals in quick succession gave them an early lead.

The first goal, a well taken wrist shot from Evan Bloodoff after he was assisted by John Curran and Charles Corcoran.

Just nine seconds later, Andrew Johnston fired home a second with the assists coming from David Clements and Drew Schiestel.

First Period: Cardiff Devils 0-2 Coventry Blaze

Coventry continued to show their dominance by adding a third. Matt Pohlkamp added to his tally for the season after being set up by both Justin Haché and Andrew Johnson.

The Devils flicked the switch however midway through the period as Joey Haddad scored on the power play. Sean McMonagle and Sean Bentivoglio were awarded the assists.

Just before the end of the period. Mike McNamee cut the deficit to one with a great goal. Sean McMonagle had his second assist of the night as well as an assist for Masi Marjamaki.

Second Period: Cardiff Devils 2-3 Coventry Blaze

Bryce Reddick tied the game up at 3-3 after he was set up by Matias Sointu and Masi Marjamaki.

For a second Coventry had though they had won the game after Luke Ferrara bundled home a shot on goal. Drew Schiestel and Andrew Johnston both added to their assists for the season.

However, Stephen Dixon found an extremely late equaliser after being assisted by Matias Sointu and Joey Haddad.

Third Period: Cardiff Devils 4-4 Coventry

Sean McMonagle found the back of the net in the shootout to give his team the best chance of moving into the next round of the Challenge Cup.
